Pilates is about retraining your body, incorporating specific deep stabilizing muscles to help return your body to a more neutral and stress-reduced state throughout exercise and daily life. Exercises are designed to restore the natural curves of the spine and re-balance the muscles around the joints, placing more emphasis on scapular stabilization and neutral pelvic alignment. Preparatory exercises and modifications catering to many different body types and abilities, make it applicable to everyday life.
In particular, the Transverse Abdominis (TA) is underused in our bodies. You may all have a 6-pack of abs, but more than likely your TA is weak. Through Pilates training we reconnect with this muscle and when strengthened, provide stability to our spine and pelvis therefore allowing our body to move in a much more shock absorbing and efficient way.
Incorporating proper breathing, recruitment of the TA, scapular stabilization, ribcage placement and spinal alignment your bodies will thank you for allowing it to move in it's optimal way! Pilates offers specific training on many different planes to strengthen our muscles in each and every role. Strengthening can be done on a Mat, Reformer, Chair, etc, and taken to each exercise that we do, but the place to start is on the mat. Building each session from the mat allows us to hone in on our deepest stabilizing muscles and prepare us to introduce strengthening props and larger equipment. Once a client understands the basic principles of Pilates and has developed body awareness and strength, they will be ready to introduce some exciting and challenging equipment!
